Exhibition presenting all 1902 surviving color images taken by S.M.Prokudin-Gorsky
in 1905-1916 has opened on November 19 at the Schusev State Museum of Architecture
(MUAR) in Moscow
In 1905-1916 Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorsky (1863-1944), an early 20th
century Russian photographer and researcher, created his “Collection of the
Splendors of Russia in Natural Colors" – a unique set of color photographs
of the Russian Empire on the eve of the October Revolution of 1917.
The exhibition “THE SPLENDORS OF RUSSIA IN NATURAL COLOR. The Complete Prokudin-Gorsky: 1905-1916” opened on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. in the main building of the Schusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow (Vozdvizhenka 5)
Until recently most of these photographs existed only as triple black and white negatives and no one (including the photographer himself) had ever seen the entire collection in color.
The negatives are preserved at the US Library of Congress, which artistically reconstructed about 170 images in color in the year 2000. These 170 images were presented at a very successful Library of Congress exhibition in the United States and Russia.
This exhibition displays the entire collection of 1902 images in color.
The task of completely registering and reproducing the entire collection in color was accomplished by the experts at the Center of Digital Restoration Technologies of the Scientific Council for Cybernetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Restavrator-M Research and Restoration Center. Specially developed algorithms and software applications made it possible to register three overlapping frames of each image at high resolution with a maximum error of one pixel for stationary objects.
With the support of Tsar Nicholas II, Prokudin-Gorsky travelled around the Empire photographing in the North of Russia, along the Volga River, in the Ural Mountains and Western Siberia, in Central Asia, the Caucasus, as well as locations related to the Napoleonic War of 1812, and in Italy, France and Switzerland.
The exhibition is organized by the Restavrator-M Research and Restoration Center and the Schusev State Museum of Architecture with the support of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Ministry of Culture. Experts from the US Library of Congress and members of the Prokudin-Gorsky family from France will attend the opening ceremony.
The exhibition will run through February 8, 2004 at the Schusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow (Vozdvizhenka 5) . Exhibition hours are 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday;11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday; closed on Monday.
